Sania unfortunate in singles and doubles pre quarter and Quarter Finals respectively
The goddess of Indian tennis Sania Mirza lost to the Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva (3rd August 2006) and moved out of the women’s singles in the $1.3m Acura Classic WTA Tour tennis event held in San Diego, California. Sania, the face of Indian tennis, has recently dropped to 44th rank in WTA ranking. She went down 6-2 3-6 6-3 to her Russian opponent in the pre-quarterfinals of the hardcourt championship.
Sania was expected to fare well in the doubles with her South African partner Liezel Huber but the duo crashed out of the doubles of the championship (WTA Acura Classic) on 5th August 2006. Sania and Liezel could not overcome Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld and USA’s Meghann Shaughnessy. Sania and Liezel seeded eighth in the event, went down in straight sets 6-2 7-5 against the fourth seeded German- American pair.
Sania Mirza not in seventh heaven
The young Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza does not give airs to herself after defeating the former world number 11 Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States at a score of 6-3 6-1 (on 1st August 2006) in the Acura Classic in San Diego. The modest youth icon, Sania feels that it is all a part and parcel of her game.
In this fascinating match Sania played some remarkable strokes to score a grandstand victory over the old hand Shaughnessy. By acquiring victory over Meghnan Sania has prepared the stage for her next match against Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia who is ranked 22 in the WTA singles ranking. When asked about the forthcoming contest Sania told DNA over the phone that “I think tomorrow’s match is going to be interesting because we both like to hit the ball very hard and pretty flat.” Sania added “I have been playing okay all round the year. It is just about getting the wind. I like hardcourts so I have been playing okay these couple of weeks. It is not about coming back. It is about getting those winds. I played pretty well today and I ma happy with the way things are going.

Bollywood superhero Akshay Kumar who is lauded for his unique performances is recently in news (not because of his latest hit Phir Hera Pheri) but because of his Sania mania. The talks bubbled when Akshay was seen attending several Wimbledon Championships in London. Though Akshay gave a short interview to the BBC, there are various speculations regarding his presence in the matches. According to the press Akshay’s primary purpose was to accompany the Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza who lately got dropped to 40th rank and lost the game in the very first round of championship. However the young lady didn’t restrain herself from London nightlife. She was spotted at many nightclubs where Akshay Kumar who seldom engages in such festivities also made his arrival. So will Akshay offer us some (Sania) Garam Masala this time? Let’s wait and watch!
Mahesh Bhupati predicts a bright future for Sania Mirza
In a current interview with the press the well known legendary Indian tennis player Mahesh Bhupati claimed that the young and budding Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza will be among the world’s top ten players within a span of two years. According to Bhupati Sania has immense potential and she is yet to attain her peak by breaking into the top ten. Bhupati said, “Sania is nowhere close to her prime yet. She is only 19 years old. Her prime will come after two years. Then she can break into the top 15 and even the top 10”. Though Sania’s ranking has slipped down to 40th, Bhupati has complete faith in her talent. To him Sania’s efforts did fell little short in the opening round of Wimbledon where she confronted the seventh seed Elena Dementieva but Sania did perform quite well.
